Artistic exchange between French and Dutch diplomacy!

During a first visit to Paris today as Dutch Foreign Minister, Wopke Hoekstra lent his French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian a work from the Dutch Foreign Ministry's art collection.

The work "Bodily presence and ways of mark making #3" by Dutch visual artist Lotte Wieringa can be seen in the Empire lounge at the Quai d'Orsay during the French EU Presidency. Conversely, the work "La Madeleine" by Brodbeck & de Barbuat, from the collection of the French ministry, adorns the gallery of ministers of the Dutch ministry of foreign affairs in The Hague this semester.

With this exchange of works of art, the Netherlands and France are not only honoring their good mutual relations, but both countries are also underlining the importance of art and culture in international relations. In diplomacy, art also provides an opening for conversation. This also applies to Wieringa's painting. Not only because the work, large and colorful, is hung in a classic interior in Paris. The visual language also makes one curious: Wieringa creates a reality in which everything is connected on an equal footing.
